Alderwood Piano and

Your Piano Teacher

I speak from experience when I say learning to play the piano is for all ages. I began learning to play when I was five years old. I didn’t have a formal teacher (my mom taught me everything she knew) until I was in high school. I would play and play. It was my emotional outlet. As I moved on with life and family, I managed to fit a piano into my living space–bedroom or living room–so I could continue to play the music I loved. As time passed, and my youngest child was in middle school, I decided to go to college to get a degree in music. It wasn’t easy being the oldest student in the class, but I pushed myself to keep it going and do my best. In 2002, I began teaching piano with a year of theory behind me. I graduated with honors from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2005. I found teaching to be a gift. Every student is different. There are so many musical styles to choose from, so much music to learn to play. It never gets old. In my teaching, I never forget what it was like to be that oldest student, struggling to learn the foreign language of music.

Fun Facts

I have five children, all grown now, and nine grandchildren (one more on the way). I love seeing new places and meeting new people. I love reading and spending time with family. The gift of music permeates all of my favorite things, and still eases my soul through all my moods and life’s ups and downs. I’m grateful for this gift, and enjoy passing it on to others so that they, too, feel the joy of music every day.
